Eight Step Preying Mantis has evolved over hundreds of years to include all ranges of combat including punches and kicks, knees and elbows, takedowns and throws, and grappling techniques (joint locks and submission holds). Eight Step Preying Mantis Kung Fu is a mixture of over 18 different martial arts including bagua, xingyi, tong bei, shuai jiao, and Mongolian wrestling. The combination of internal and external applications makes Eight Step a truly unique system.

Students will learn striking (Da), throwing (shuai), joint locks (Na), weapons, forms (taolu), and blocking (Dang) and evading techniques.

Eight Step Curriculum:

  • Stances
  • Hand techniques
  • Kicking techniques
  • Forms (taolu)
  • Coordination drills
  • Throws
  • Joint locks
  • Fighting sets and combinations
  • Weapons (straight sword-jian, broadsword-dao, and staff-guan)

Students progress at their own level and ability and receive individualized instruction in each and every class. Techniques are explained in a traditional Chinese method and then broke down into western terminologies to help the student better understand them.

Our curriculum is designed to increase coordination, create better posture, increase strength, flexibility, speed and balance no matter what skill level or experience.

Students can start at any age and fitness level. Our programs are designed to enhance the skills of all abilities.

While Mantis Kung Fu is an excellent choice for self-defense, the real benefits of practice include self-discipline, stress relief, coordination, physical fitness, balance and flexibility. All this is backed by hundreds of years of philosophy, culture, and holistic healing techniques. This makes Eight Step a very unique art focused on the overall health of the practitioner rather than just a collection of effective fighting techniques.

Tai Chi Schedule

Wed 6pm – 7pm

Our class starts off with a relaxing and energizing meditation. Students learn to relax their mind and body to increase focus and reduce stress. Meditation is explained in an easy to understand manner so that students can feel benefits immediately.

Next, we energize the body through qigong (chi gong) exercises. You will feel your body’s energy increase as you perform these ancient and simple health activities. Now that the body is feeling energized and loose, we begin simple warm up exercises to increase circulation to the joints and muscles.

Now feeling full of energy, we begin teaching the Tai Chi health set. Breathing, posture, and body movement are combined in our tai chi health set to give you a great energizing workout that will increase strength, balance, flexibility, and posture all while not taxing your joints. Tai chi can be described as the perfect non-impact exercise and has shown many benefits including reducing injuries due to falls by 25%-according to the Journal of the American Medical Association.
